How European Roulette Payouts Work

Every payout in European roulette follows a single formula: winning payout = stake × (multiplier + 1). The "+1" returns your original stake, so a £10 bet at 35:1 returns £360 total - your £10 stake plus £350 winnings.

Payouts are set to be fair-seeming while maintaining the casino's 2.70% edge. The key: all payouts are calculated as if the wheel had 36 pockets (not 37). The missing unit across all odds is the zero - the house's edge pocket.

What Does Zero Pay?

Zero (0) behaves like any other number for inside bets:

  • Straight Up on 0 pays 35:1 - a £10 bet returns £360
  • Split 0-1, 0-2, or 0-3 pays 17:1
  • Street 0-1-2 or 0-2-3 pays 11:1
  • Corner 0-1-2-3 (basket) pays 8:1

For outside bets, zero is neither red, black, odd, even, low, nor high. When zero lands, all outside bets lose. (In French roulette with La Partage, even-money bets receive half back - but this is standard European roulette.)

Payout Calculator

To calculate any payout manually: Total Return = Stake × (Multiplier + 1)
Example: £50 on a Corner bet → £50 × 9 = £450 total returned (£400 profit + £50 stake).

Why Are Payouts Set This Way?

All payouts in European roulette are calculated as if there were 36 pockets, not 37. The formula for fair odds on a bet covering N numbers in a 36-pocket wheel is: payout = (36/N) - 1.

  • Straight Up (N=1): 36/1 - 1 = 35:1
  • Split (N=2): 36/2 - 1 = 17:1
  • Street (N=3): 36/3 - 1 = 11:1
  • Corner (N=4): 36/4 - 1 = 8:1
  • Six Line (N=6): 36/6 - 1 = 5:1
  • Dozen/Column (N=12): 36/12 - 1 = 2:1
  • Even Money (N=18): 36/18 - 1 = 1:1

The zero pocket (the 37th pocket) is not accounted for in these payouts - that gap is the house edge. For full probability analysis, see our odds and house edge guide.
